Gardening from a Hammock
This exciting chapter in my writing journey blossomed from my deep love of gardening, growing as naturally and unexpectedly as the plants I tend. What began as personal obsession soon found its voice in newspaper articles, which ultimately led to a regular column in National Post called The Lazy Gardener. One of the first people I interviewed for the column was Dan Cooper, whose passion for gardening sparked a collaboration that would result in our book, Gardening from a Hammock.
This practical guide to low-maintenance gardening is complemented by stunning photographs (though not by me!) featuring the expertise of outstanding gardeners and their choices for low-maintenance plants for both sun and shade. It’s a book of garden personalities.
To promote our first run, we spoke at horticultural associations throughout Ontario and beyond, sharing our book with eager gardeners. Dan, ever the natural salesman, is still available for talks.
In another turn through the gardening world, I had the opportunity to write an online blog, Low-Maintenance Mondays, for Canadian Gardening. Although the book has long since sold out and is now out of print, the connections I made and the knowledge I gained were wonderful gifts. As a by-product, the tips from these gardening pros have enhanced the look and experimentation I continue in our garden every season.
